Who we are & why we are

Welcome to the gallery site of Broken Light Collective. We are artists of all levels and abilities who are affected by mental illness. We create and we share our work for the therapeutic benefits to us, as well as others who may be struggling and feeling scared and alone. Together we can move from disconnected to collective.

Photos taken by a woman in New Jersey with severe clinical depression. She is currently dealing with her depressive state as well as the effects of hurricane Sandy. She is grateful that her family and house are okay minus power and heat, and feels terribly for those who have it worse.

About these photos: “In times of crisis-be it emotional, physical, national-everything gets turned upside down. Things you know to be one way instantly become another. The geometry of life changes. With hurricanes, trees and power lines are broken and no longer upright, and with depression things can feel the same. What seemed sturdy and taken for granted of becomes a tangled dangerous mess. You are uprooted, left with no power. You need help, but sometimes it doesn’t come, and you are left for days in seemingly endless darkness.”

I know what it’s like to feel this way (photos) inside, but have others condemn me for not understanding the reasons. I am praying (literally, not figuratively) for all affected by Sandy.

    I wish I had seen these sooner…

I find that that reptilian part of my brain takes over when crisis hits, and I find respite from my emotions.
