Who we are & why we are

Welcome to the gallery site of Broken Light Collective. We are artists of all levels and abilities who are affected by mental illness. We create and we share our work for the therapeutic benefits to us, as well as others who may be struggling and feeling scared and alone. Together we can move from disconnected to collective.

Photo taken by contributor Carrie Hilgert, a photographer, painter, and healer from Northeast Kansas. Carrie is on an evolving journey. In her past, she was affected by chronic physical and mental illnesses, including depression. Photography, especially self-portraiture, was a tool that helped her throughout those challenging times, and allowed her to process her dark feelings. Carrie believes that her experiences with mental illness were a catalyst for her to discover her creative and spiritual gifts. She is now on a positive journey of wonder and change, using those gifts to help others.

About this photo: I just woke up from a dream where I visited this place at night that I had forgotten about. There was a small tree with little orbs that flew around. I caught one, which no one else could do and held it. It glowed and I told it that I loved it and it repeated it back to me. But that’s what the orbs did. They repeated things.

We got to the tree and it flew back into the branches with the others. Here, in the sky, you could see the moon and other planets up close. They were close to the earth. For some reason you could see Greece and Canada but they looked like planets hanging in the sky.
