Broken Light: A Photography Collective

We are photographers living with or affected by mental illness; supporting each other one photograph at a time. Join our community, submit today!

Photo taken by a woman with severe clinical depression, as well as anxiety and panic attacks. She loves taking photos as an outlet, and since she has not been able to leave the house much recently, she has turned to self-portraiture.

About this photo: “I feel like I am constantly wearing one mask or another. A mask that I hide behind. A mask that separates me from everyone else. A barrier keeping me from the world, and the world from me. I know if I am going to get better and be able to move on with my life, I will need to let go of the mask, but I have been wearing it for so long, I don’t even know how.”

I love this photo. The mask looks great, and the emotion is so touching.

I recognise this so very well. I hope you find the strength to shed the mask.. It can be done I know because I let go of mine enough to get back out into the world.. it’s still there when I need it.

I, too, love this image. There is such sadness here but the pink hair looks like hope to me.

Great theater…..if only it was just a play and you could step out of the costume and go home.
