Who we are & why we are

Welcome to the gallery site of Broken Light Collective. We are artists of all levels and abilities who are affected by mental illness. We create and we share our work for the therapeutic benefits to us, as well as others who may be struggling and feeling scared and alone. Together we can move from disconnected to collective.

Photography series taken by Rosie Kitt, a 27-year-old from Nottingham who has experienced depression, anxiety and PTSD. Rosie finds healing through creativity.

About the series: “Manifestation of Trauma on the Body’ explores the effect of both the physical and psychological impressions that traumatic experiences can leave behind on the body. These include desensitization, flashbacks, speechlessness, fight or flight response and the effect on the entire organism.

Resulting stress from painful experiences can harm us through the physiological changes to the brain and body which can persist way beyond the trauma itself. This work uses photography to capture and freeze these attributes, much like the way trauma imprints characteristics on the brain.”

Very intense, and very well done. The second-to-last really resonates – it makes me think of blocked screams and tied-up energy in the throat.
