Please welcome first time contributor Beth, a 22-year-old photography student from the UK. Through her images she aims to reduce the stigma and stereotypes often attached to mental health issues by portraying her own experiences of depression and anxiety honestly. Photography became a tool for her to work through some of these issues and find better ways of coping with them.
About these photos: Currently in the UK 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health issue each year, and with increasing news coverage being dedicated to mental health, the need for realistic imagery is needed, both to reduce stigma and encourage other people to speak out about their issues, without the fear of judgement.
After exploring many ways in which I could respond I settled upon documenting my own experiences of living with a mental health condition on a day to day basis. The use of multiple exposure in my work represents a world which can often become overwhelming, and shows how nature can provide some relief rather than solely relying on prescription medication.
