Who we are & why we are

Welcome to the gallery site of Broken Light Collective. We are artists of all levels and abilities who are affected by mental illness. We create and we share our work for the therapeutic benefits to us, as well as others who may be struggling and feeling scared and alone. Together we can move from disconnected to collective.

Be the Colour

Photo taken by contributor Livonne, a 55-year-old woman who lives in the Blue Mountains of Australia. Livonne was diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder over 20 years ago following a troubled childhood, a violent marriage, and the tragic death of her 10-year-old daughter on an access visit. She eventually found herself unable to work full time and at a loss as to what the future held for her. Livonne returned to college three years ago to study photography to complement the blog she writes about her life. When she was very young, she escaped the trauma of her childhood by retreating to fantasy. The Magic Faraway Tree was her main escape. She now finds that same sense of peace by creating fantasy pieces and enjoys not only storytelling with words but also with pictures.

About this photo: “How can she fit into a black and white world when her soul dreams of beautiful colours that don’t exist here on earth.”

A strikingly wonderful photograph and and inspirational story. Very good to see the younger members of the British Royal Family taking a strong interest in mental health issues. A little bit of support can make a big difference.

Thank you The Photonomad. It is fantastic when well known people talk openly and honestly about their struggles with mental health.. It breaks down more barriers 🙂
