Photo taken by contributor Hank Shaw, a 63-year-old writer living in Rochester, N.Y. Many of his friends and family members have suffered from depression and serious mental health issues.
About this photo: “Rochester, N.Y. was home to the oldest urban indoor mall in America. Long after it had outlived its usefulness, it was torn down to make way for new development. The dismantling of the mall—which was across the street from my office—took several years to complete. I took hundreds of pictures of the process, capturing abstracts and images that had, for me anyway, both political and personal dimensions. This image, capturing one of the buildings being torn down against the backdrop of one of the newest downtown skyscrapers, reminds me of the growing inequality in our country. It also reminds me of the times when I felt that I was under construction in a world where success and happiness seemed to come so easily to others.”
