Who we are & why we are

Welcome to the gallery site of Broken Light Collective. We are artists of all levels and abilities who are affected by mental illness. We create and we share our work for the therapeutic benefits to us, as well as others who may be struggling and feeling scared and alone. Together we can move from disconnected to collective.

Photo taken by first-time contributor Jason Grim, a 25-year-old man from Jacksonville, Florida. Jason is a self-portrait artist who uses his lens to create dark characters and situations. As an artist he is inspired by horror cinema, novels, and video games but is also influenced by his experiences with depression. Art is the tool he uses to get through the rough times. A therapy of sorts. Jason graduated from the University of North Florida with a Bachelors in Fine Art Photography in 2013.

About this photo: “The Mare” is one of my single portraits – as in it’s a stand alone idea and not a part of a test. This portrait features a man having a nightmare, and his nightmare is coming to life beside him. I also feel as though it resembles the dark part of oneself that is always there, but a part one forcibly ignores.”

Find more from Jason at his website.
