Photo taken by contributor Thirdeyemom, a woman who experienced severe postpartum depression after the birth of her first child. It was a terrifying, isolating experience for her, which included terrible insomnia and hallucinations. Thankfully with the help of doctors and family, one week after her son’s first birthday she was able to board a plane to South Africa, resuming her love of travel. Through traveling, writing, and photography she began to see the beauty of the world again.
About this photo: “This photo was taken in Manang, Nepal about three-fourths way along the Annapurna Trek. I snapped the shot the morning after the first snowfall and it was absolutely breathtaking. As the temperature rises here in the Midwest and we enter the dog days of summer, I close my eyes and dream about the peace and stillness I felt in this one place, perhaps the most majestic on earth.”

Stunning photography. Beautiful story of your emotional survival of what is very often a hugely crippling and misunderstood condition.

I suffer with a few different types of depression but am so grateful that I did not get post partum – I only had one day that was moving toward that after the difficult birth of my first son but it passed. That must have been awful for you. I am so glad that it has passed and your photography is beautiful That photo is stunning – I have never seen a place like that and it is so nice to experience it through your photo.
