Who we are & why we are

Welcome to the gallery site of Broken Light Collective. We are artists of all levels and abilities who are affected by mental illness. We create and we share our work for the therapeutic benefits to us, as well as others who may be struggling and feeling scared and alone. Together we can move from disconnected to collective.

Photo taken by first-time contributor GeeCee19, a 49-year-old from Tralee, Ireland. He was diagnosed with manic depression at 18 and has fought a serious battle with it since, along with social anxiety and addictions. He has been clean from substance abuse for about 15 years, but enough damage was done that some 10 years later he had to quit his job as a carpenter. After a year out, he decided to go back to college to pursue a degree in Applied Social Studies, and as a result he has gained great experience in the care sector. Pen Relief is a writing project he recently set up. It is a compilation of writing by himself and others about going through difficult times. He hopes to print either a book or journals of them as a kind of self help intervention.

About this photo: “This photograph is of my garden which was an overgrown weed filled area when I got it some 8 years ago. Due to physical limitations it has been hard work but this is one of my finest photos of it. This garden is in the middle of a housing estate in Tralee, yet those who enter it feel like they are in the countryside. I write my journals in this garden, which also contributes to my mental well being.”

Gardening is great therapy and you have done a great job in every sense. Ever thought about turning it into a profession?

Thanks for the kind words, I have never thought of doing it professionally, I just love working in it, I have added more plants this year the majority I have got from people throwing them away, I will post one again later in the year.

Hey this is really inspiring and brilliant! I’m going through a similar thing myself and as I’m starting to really notice my progress I’ve started to write about it – like you are doing! I’m hoping to relate my blog to young adults like me. Please could you have a look and perhaps let me know your thoughts? Thank you so much! H x
