Photo taken by Tiger Lillies, a 48-year-old woman located in Ontario who suffers from deep depression, psychosis, and agoraphobia, possibly bipolar, all while raising her 2 young grandchildren, 4 and 6 years old. Thankfully she has a supportive partner Rick who helps make daily life with children possible. Her grandchildren, as well as her recent love of photography, have become her saviours and kept her from succumbing to the negative temptations that regularly haunt her. She has tried to commit suicide several times in the past, but thankfully is still with us. Her hopes are to get past her illness, as well as glaucoma, and become a professional photographer.
About this photo: “This young lady’s name is Jess. She is one of the bravest and most caring young people I’ve had the honour of meeting. Jess’ Mother and I have been friends for a very long time. Even before Jess was born. So when I was asked to photograph Jess’ 16th birthday party last year, I jumped at the honour of doing so. When arriving at the hall, I was a little surprised to see that everyone and all the decorations were in pink. I suppose a young girl would love pink…but this much? Soon I found out that Jess, in memory of her Grandmother, wanted everyone to wear pink. She wanted no gifts, just donations to the Cancer Society. Wow! I thought, not too many would do such a thing…but this is Jess. Warm, caring, sensitive, and giving.
It was about 8 months after her party that we received a message saying they had a Dr.’s appointment for Jess and all were hoping for good news. The family’s world crashed when they they were told that Jess was found to have Cancer. The rest of us, family and friends prayed, and continued to give support where we could. Jess had to leave school due to chemo treatments. She was very sick for quite some time, but that didn’t keep this brave girl down. After losing her hair, she decided to start a hat drive. Once again, thinking of others before herself. She thought other teens would love to have a hat after losing their hair to chemo. Her family was just as strong, showing their love and support every way possible.
A few months ago, we got word that Jess is now Cancer free!!! Thank the Lord!! To celebrate her hair growing back, Jess asked if I would like to do another photo shoot for her. How could I ever say no to such a beautiful young woman. This photo is from that session.“

That is a very poweful story. Yours as well as that of Jess. If I believed in God, I would surely say God bless. Since I do not, I only say … well done both of you. Knowing that people can be this strong when facing all the negative sides of their lives makes me want to live even more because it reminds me that if we try really hard, it does pay off…
Thank you and all the best to you and Jess, of course.
