Photo taken by Clare, a woman who has been diagnosed with major depression, bipolar, among other things. Photography is something she studied in school some years ago, and still enjoys very much.
About this photo: “Manhattan means many things to me, and my feelings for it can swing like my moods. It’s a place of culture where dreams are made, and a place where they are crushed, a place to play and a place to work, a place of growth and a place of decay. Looking out over the rooftops, in the depressed state that I often find myself in, I may not think of all of these things, but it is a feeling that I have, one of soaring and falling at once.
This was shot with a Holga 35mm camera, using tri-x film.”

A beautiful capture but at the same time it shows a certain sadness that the photographer felt during the time she saw this image. Amazing. I hope Clare is better now. Depression takes away the smile and light we used to feel.

This is AMAZING! I just bought a Holga 120N and can’t wait to start playing and figuring it out 🙂
The thing that I love about photography the most is that we can capture a moment, make people feel an emotion, and I find going out in the field soothing. I’m sure that there are others that feel the same way. Clare has a talent for capturing this lovely photo. Two thumbs up to ya chickadee!!

This is really wonderful. It has a very classic feeling to it as a result of the vignetting and the slight fuzziness of the focus. It’s reminiscent of the work of the early pioneers of photography like Eugène Atget.

A wonderful merging of artistic vision and photographic medium. The image really captures your feeling of “soaring and falling” simultaneously. As a viewer, I have a parallel experience: elevated by the strength of your creative expression, weighed down by the heaviness of this scene as you portray it.

Great picture! I too like to get up high and see things from a different angle. Makes myself and my problems seem smaller somehow.
