Photo taken by first-time contributor Curtis, a Canadian artist and musician in his 50s, who has struggled with anxiety and depression for most of his life. Being diagnosed with depression 15 years ago, he started a slow climb out of the darkness, but after being unsatisfied with the side effects of medication decided to try other methods. Depression robbed him of a potential career in music but with a desire to still create and needing a reason to build his self worth he took up photography. After spending five years shooting music, Curtis realized he needed to say something with his art and so began to work on conceptual photography. He spent the better part of 2018 conceiving and shooting a series entitled The Muted Degenerate which deals with various aspects of his personality including depression, anxiety and introversion.
About this photo: “Misconceptions deals with the varied and many times incorrect assumptions of what depression actually means for those who suffer from it.”
