Romanticize Series

Photos by contributor Patrycja Marciniak, a 24-year-old graphic designer, artist, and photographer from Poland who has struggled with depression, anxiety, and dermatillomania, the urge to scratch and pick at one’s skin.

About these photos: “A weird and disturbing trend has occured recently on social media – people who think that depression is something glamorous, tragically beautiful, desirable, a condition to boast about. By replacing tears with cliché pink glitter, I created a comment on the topic. Depression is not something that should be romanticized, because no matter how beautiful you think something looks, it still hurts inside.”

  1. I disagree with the comment above and I am deeply, MADLY in love with this little series. I am also deeply conflicted with this new idea that mental illness is some kind of “relatable” social media post. I’ve seen it all over the place. ultimately though, it’s started a conversation, and that is what we need!

  2. I believe depression is quite simply complex. Unless you have had it or live with it you don’t know what it’s like to feel troubled and alone.
