Who we are & why we are

Welcome to the gallery site of Broken Light Collective. We are artists of all levels and abilities who are affected by mental illness. We create and we share our work for the therapeutic benefits to us, as well as others who may be struggling and feeling scared and alone. Together we can move from disconnected to collective.

Photo taken by contributor Kevin W. Gardner, a 53-year-old man from Oklahoma who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in the late eighties. Kevin is supported by a wonderful mental health team, including a counselor, case manager, and wellness coach. He uses photography as a coping skill whenever things gets stressful.

About this photo: “This Christmas ornament represents me being alone on Christmas day. I have been alone on Christmas day for several years and it does not get easier when everyone is with family and friends and having a great holiday dinner while I am at home with no Christmas dinner at all.

An old friend of mine spent her Christmas Day in our house today. She is alone, but today she was not all alone. Beautiful picture!

Thanks you all for your support. I kept myself busy learning my new Nikon D3200 dslr camera today and took some interesting photos. I have posted some new pictures on my flickr page.

your photo is beautiful. And I know what it is like to feel alone – even in a crowd. But when it hurtslike this don’t be alone if you can help it in any way. Go to your church. Let someone know – I am sure that sonmeone would invite you to join their festivities. I ahve had some Christmas’ alone but spent with friends back when I lived in NJ and had a circle of close friends…in the years my children were with me it was fine but in the years they were with Dad it was rough. We aer only as alone as we allow ourselves to be. You are very talented. Join a phoography Meet-Up group perhaps. Or if you do any writing possibly a writers group. I just did this to help myself to meet more people here in Delaware.I have been here nearly 4 years and only have one close friend and she technically lives in NJ.
