Who we are & why we are

Welcome to the gallery site of Broken Light Collective. We are artists of all levels and abilities who are affected by mental illness. We create and we share our work for the therapeutic benefits to us, as well as others who may be struggling and feeling scared and alone. Together we can move from disconnected to collective.

Photo taken by contributor Captivating Bitter, a woman in her thirties who has struggled with anxiety and depression for most of her life. She has survived emotional abuse, sexual abuse and rape. She has survived suicide attempts and years of self-harm. After wandering her way through life unable to trust and barely feeling alive, she is now fighting to live a healthy life. She has been reading, journaling, blogging and working hard to heal. She is finally taking care of herself and starting to feel better.

About this photo: “Some days I feel so delicate, like the least pressure will shatter me…Some days I feel like just waking up and breathing is all I can handle… then I go outside and see things like this and I am captivated… just the beautiful dance of light and shadow… and I think that maybe walking a day in the dark is not so bad…”

Those delicate, back-lit leaves are stunning! Illumination, darkness and light co-existing. It sounds like nature is a creative and spiritual sanctuary, for you. You are definitely a survivor and so are those beautiful leaves!
