Who we are & why we are

Welcome to the gallery site of Broken Light Collective. We are artists of all levels and abilities who are affected by mental illness. We create and we share our work for the therapeutic benefits to us, as well as others who may be struggling and feeling scared and alone. Together we can move from disconnected to collective.

Photo taken by contributor Craig MacLean, a 51-year-old man living in Ontario, Canada. Craig is a film school graduate. In that program he felt completely in his element, but after graduation he was never able to get the career he wanted in film, largely due to lack of confidence and low self-esteem. Several years later, while at work, he was in a robbery. Craig has struggled with PTSD ever since, as well as debilitating anxiety and depression. Photography is his outlet and his passion. He is self taught and hopes that one day, as he defines his style and the subjects he wants to explore, it will become a career.

About this photo: “I was in a deep depression, and a friend suggested I make an image that shows how I feel.

So I was out on a very cold bitter day. It was windy and lots of blowing snow. This is along the shoreline of

Lake Ontario, at Niagara-On-The-Lake. I was driving and I saw the picnic table, pretty much as you see it in

the photo. So I braved the elements, what did I have to lose? A few weeks later I developed the film, and here it

is. I still feel a little like this image. Good news is, it’s getting warmer, the snow’s melted, and soon everyone will

be able to enjoy a nice outdoor picnic, without having to endure what I had to, to create this image.

It’s title is simply, Winter.”

    Hi Craig,
While I see the bleak winter, I also see a stark calligraphy in the shapes created by the table’s supports. A haiku in a winter setting. Thank you.
