Who we are & why we are

Welcome to the gallery site of Broken Light Collective. We are artists of all levels and abilities who are affected by mental illness. We create and we share our work for the therapeutic benefits to us, as well as others who may be struggling and feeling scared and alone. Together we can move from disconnected to collective.

Photo taken by contributor millrick, a man who currently resides in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Rick’s experience with mood disorders started as a teen in an isolated farmhouse, in an isolated village, in an isolated region of Canada. Having survived his first brush with suicide, Rick went on to a successful career only to have his life derailed by mental illness once again. Forty years later, Rick is rebuilding his life one photograph at a time.

About this photo: “The winter of 2015 was very brutal for my psyche; so much so that I wasn’t sure I would survive it. I’ve been living on an emotional roller coaster for so long I never know when I’m going to feel up and when I’m going to feel down. I hadn’t left my apartment for two days when I decided to capture some images from the very last minutes of the winter season. This image is brutally metaphoric, but there are few greys in my life right now.”
