Who we are & why we are

Welcome to the gallery site of Broken Light Collective. We are artists of all levels and abilities who are affected by mental illness. We create and we share our work for the therapeutic benefits to us, as well as others who may be struggling and feeling scared and alone. Together we can move from disconnected to collective.

Photo taken by contributor Captivating Bitter, a woman in her thirties who has struggled with anxiety and depression for most of her life. She has survived emotional abuse, sexual abuse and rape. She has survived suicide attempts and years of self-harm. After wandering her way through life unable to trust and barely feeling alive, she is now fighting to live a healthy life. She has been reading, journaling, blogging and working hard to heal. She is finally taking care of herself and starting to feel better.

About this photo: “I took this in St Augustine at Mission Nombre de Dios. I love the cross here, it’s absolutely beautiful. I enjoyed spending the day in this old city. I love the architecture, the cobble-stone streets, the statues… It feels good to be surrounded by history… it feels grounding somehow. There is something immeasurably comforting about being surrounded by the enjoyment and memories of those who came before me.

I actually found her from another pic on here and visited her blog. I saw this and was floored. So glad it’s now here for others to see.

Incredible picture. Really excellent, and reminiscent of cinematography.
