A Bird in the Hand

Photo taken by contributor Kait Mauro, a 22-year-old Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native who has lived all over the country. She is trying to see all 50 states and has been to 38 so far. Kait has a diagnosis of major depression, severe and recurrent, as well as having experienced anxiety and disordered eating during her teenage years. She is currently an undergraduate at Washington University in Saint Louis where she studies Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies and Creative Writing. Her primary mediums are poetry and photography, though she has also been known to dabble in printmaking and other genres of writing. She seeks to understand her experiences and to connect with others through her art.

About this photo: “I took this self portrait out at Lake Saint Louis when I found these feathers laying on the sand there, having been shed by the geese who make the lake their home. I have a thing for photographs of hands holding things, I just love looking at hands – some of them are so beautiful. I also have a thing for feathers, as you might guess from the feather tattoo visible on my left arm in this photograph. I think they are aesthetically beautiful, the shape and texture of them, and they often come in such beautiful neutral shades. I think, were I an animal, I’d be a feathered thing.

  1. This is a beautiful picture and I imagine each person that sees it will have a different image come to mind. I see strength and yet fragility at the same time. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful photo!
