Who we are & why we are

Welcome to the gallery site of Broken Light Collective. We are artists of all levels and abilities who are affected by mental illness. We create and we share our work for the therapeutic benefits to us, as well as others who may be struggling and feeling scared and alone. Together we can move from disconnected to collective.

Photo taken by contributor FromDarknesstoLight, a man from Germany who experienced a drug-related psychosis in December 2011, and has been taking medication since. He continued to regularly abuse drugs like Speed, Mdma, Cocaine and Ecstasy until February of this year, when the drugs, combined with his medication and psychosis led doctors in Germany to diagnose him as schizophrenic. He had to stop his studies at university and lost his part-time job as a tennis coach. Shortly thereafter, he decided that he had to change his lifestyle. He looked for alternative ways of healing, and ended up going to India where he did an ayurvedic treatment for 7 weeks. His return flight was schedule for the 19th of September, but he discovered so many inspiring things that he changed his flight and is now staying in India till February to continue learning and healing.

About this photo: “This photograph was taken in the village outside of Amma´s Ashram in Amritapuri, Kerala, India. I like it because I associate it with the beginning of my journey in India. The empty boats are all waiting for a passenger and for the journey to begin...

Thanks, Emily, Paula and Sam… I will continue the healing journey! Although it´s difficult sometimes. It goes up and down and I´m craving for something to feel better! On the other hand my experiences here make me feel so good sometimes and I just feel great without anything. It always depends on my mood. I learned to accept the mood swings and I think that´s the first step for improvement!
