Photo taken by first-time contributor Jess, a woman whose family has been affected by mental illness for many generations. The illness manifests in different ways. It is sometimes hard to recognize through the guise of personality and circumstances, but deep sadness or rage eventually reveals each person’s underlining struggle. It has taken her a while to understand her own struggles with depression and anxiety and she is now trying to understand how these same issues are manifesting in her daughter. It is a legacy she wishes she could stop.
About this photo: “This image was part of a series of self-portraits I made in our woods as I explored my recent feelings of depression. It is an image of hiding/escape and an image of revealing/exploring. Do I dare explore the dark pipe?“

very interesting. I too suffer depression and anxiety and love photography and all the paper arts but I haven’t actually used my photos to explain or give image to those feelings. I must start trying to do that!
