Who we are & why we are

Welcome to the gallery site of Broken Light Collective. We are artists of all levels and abilities who are affected by mental illness. We create and we share our work for the therapeutic benefits to us, as well as others who may be struggling and feeling scared and alone. Together we can move from disconnected to collective.

Photo taken by contributor Bipolar On Fire, a woman in her 40’s who lives and works in Boulder, Colorado. She has Bipolar Disorder and Depression, as well as Fibromyalgia. It is a great struggle for her to work full-time and has been for a while. She works as a System Administrator, but will hopefully be leaving the corporate world soon and supporting herself through her art. She passionately loves photography, writing, and music, and her many other creative artistic endeavours (sewing, decoupage, jewelry making, batik, screenprinting, and singing). Her aim in life is to create beauty and bring joy to the lives of others through her creations and words.

About this photo: “This is Bucky, the mule deer buck who lives in the foothills near my house.  I am very fortunate to live in such a beautiful place.  I can walk from my house into this gorgeous open space and *poof* there are the mountains, the deer and the coyotes howling.  Sometimes I just need to get to the mountains!  I feel like I need to lay face-down and hug the earth.  I need to go to Mama and cry my eyes out.  And that is ok.  Bucky is there.  So is Chocolate Deer, and Chukie Deer, you see, they all have fabulous names, and they are my friends.  They don’t know it, but they are.”
