Renewal

Photo taken by a woman who has suffered from depression, anxiety and panic disorder for many years. It has affected her whole life and family. She is trying to fight through it by working with doctors, using medication as needed, and immersing herself in her photography.

About this photo: “This photograph was taken several years ago in the Outer Banks, NC. This was one of the last fun trips I remember before my depression-induced crash. The memory stands out like a beacon of light. A reminder that I can be functional, travel, and actually have some fun. And that although I may feel like I am lost in rough seas right now, a lighthouse may be just ahead to guide me to safe shores.

  1. Beautiful and strong image. One of the poems in my book “The Journey Home” takes the lighthouse as a symbol of self in recovery: “I am my own lighthouse now, warding myself away from dangerous rocks which may bring me down.” In time we can all become our own lighthouses again…
