Surviving Postpartum Depression

Photo taken by Thirdeyemom, who experienced severe postpartum depression after the birth of her first child. It was a terrifying, isolating experience for her, which included terrible insomnia and hallucinations. Thankfully with the help of doctors and family, one week after her son’s first birthday she was able to board a plane to South Africa, resuming her love of travel. Through traveling, writing, and photography she began to see the beauty of the world again.

About this photo: “I spotted these elephants on a safari in South Africa back in 2005. It was my first trip away from my son and a major achievement for me. After suffering severe postpartum depression after his birth one year earlier, I never thought I’d be on a safari in Africa. It was a dream of mine that I always held close. Seeing this mother elephant protecting her baby made me smile and think of my son and I. How far I’d come in a year!”
