Who we are & why we are

Welcome to the gallery site of Broken Light Collective. We are artists of all levels and abilities who are affected by mental illness. We create and we share our work for the therapeutic benefits to us, as well as others who may be struggling and feeling scared and alone. Together we can move from disconnected to collective.

Photo taken By Leigh Righton, a Vancouver based portrait photographer who recently shot a series called “Across the Universe” that studies movement and expressions of freedom and joy. Leigh is supportive of the mental illness community, and explores themes through her work that speak to people who are suffering.

About this photo: “This image was a collaboration between myself and dancer Thoenn Glover. When we initially came together it was an experiment for me to study and capture movement. I had a different vision for the series going into the shoot, and it took me six months waiting for the right direction to come to mind after the session. I experimented with many different ideas and versions, I finally began to play with the concept of space and as soon as I did so, it immediately clicked. The series and this image in particular hint at a release and feeling of freedom and moving forward. The full series can be viewed here.”
