Who we are & why we are

Welcome to the gallery site of Broken Light Collective. We are artists of all levels and abilities who are affected by mental illness. We create and we share our work for the therapeutic benefits to us, as well as others who may be struggling and feeling scared and alone. Together we can move from disconnected to collective.

Photo taken by Thirdeyemom, a survivor of severe postpartum depression. She used travel, writing, and photography, in addition to professional help, to fight her way out of the darkness. See more of her inspiring story here.

About this photo: The winding streets of Xela, Guatemala.  I could spend hours weaving up and down these streets always finding something new and unusual to photograph.  Xela is in the highlands of Guatemala and surrounded by volcanoes.   I was fortunate to spend a week there studying Spanish and volunteering up in the hills at a school for impoverished children.  Each afternoon, I would have to climb up for twenty minutes on dusty, unpaved roads to reach the school.  The children’s smiles and gratitude made everything more than worth my effort.  Smiles that would warm my heart forever and make me determined to give back to others.

**Submit photos to Broken Light here. If you’ve ever felt depression or anxiety you can participate. *Now on Facebook & Twitter! Like us for addtl. work, announcements, links, etc.
