With Open Arms

3. With Open Arms

Photo taken by first-time contributor Katie Claire who has struggled with anxiety, depression, disorder eating, and somatic symptoms from her past. After being given at second chance at life through the mental health care she received, Katie committed herself to giving to others what had been given to her at her time of greatest need. She now works as a clinical psychologist in Virginia, coordinating an outpatient program for Veterans seeking recovery from mental illness. Katie facilitates highly attended “Mental Health and Photography” groups where participants are challenged to illustrate various aspects of their struggle and journey in recovery. She completes the assignments herself as a means of providing hope to others.

About this photo: “Opening oneself to all of life’s experiences, supports freedom. This freedom comes through acceptance of what it means to be human. Rain is felt by all. Chosen responses to both external and internal worlds dictate destinies. With open arms, all conditions can be weathered and trueness remain as one moves through life.”

  1. I’m only happy when it rains, I’m only happy when it’s complicated. And though I know you can’t appreciate it, I’m only happy when it rains…

  2. This is great. I miss the old days when this blog was really a collective. I felt like I was a part of something, but anything I’ve ever been a part of goes away. I love rain. It mutes the outside world. Ironically, I feel less alone.
