Please welcome first-time contributor Brandy, a 37-year-old woman living with her Pomeranian, Zipper, in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. She is a Certified Veterinary Technician, having devoted her life to animal advocacy, as well as a photographer. In 2004 she was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, amongst a myriad of other mental afflictions, but has suffered from severe clinical depression and anxiety since the early age of 12. Brandy has had multiple hospitalizations over the years and struggles daily with the mental health demons that plague her. She finds solace behind her camera, and often times in front of it, creating conceptual images that allow her to express her emotions and feelings in a creative and safe way as a self portrait artist.
About this photo: “This image is all about the hypo-mania that I experience. How it feels like I’m so ALIVE for a change; electricity surging through my veins. My mind whirling with thought after thought, each one more profound than the last. It’s as if pure philosophical genius flows through my seemingly magical pen as it frantically scribes nearly illegible words across the page. The sound of the pen scratching the paper and my desultory breath barely audible over the high pitched hum radiating from within me are the only sounds as I fill journal after journal with my precious thoughts. This hypo-mania is a welcomed change, almost a gift by way of comparison, only I know what’s coming next...”

Thank you! That means a lot! This is the first time I’ve been brave enough to post any of my conceptual images surrounding mental illness on any platform, I’m glad someone enjoyed it!
