Photo taken by contributor Carrie Hilgert, a photographer, painter, and healer from Northeast Kansas. Carrie is on an evolving journey. In her past, she was affected by chronic physical and mental illnesses, including depression. Photography, especially self-portraiture, was a tool that helped her throughout those challenging times, and allowed her to process her dark feelings. Carrie believes that her experiences with mental illness were a catalyst for her to discover her creative and spiritual gifts. She is now on a positive journey of wonder and change, using those gifts to help others.
About this photo: “I’ve been thinking a lot about the things that make my heart sing the most…because I think there lies a key in those feelings to what is next in my journey here. Whenever I’m unsure, which has been the last several months of wondering if I’m doing the right thing, etc.
I’ve had some incredible moments of clarity followed by some crippling moments of doubt concerning the former clarity. But through it all, I see a subtle weaving of threads.
And then the other day a local friend called with an emergency. My schedule was serendipitously clear and even though I don’t journey in person often, I knew this was going to happen. I laid my fears aside and jumped in. And I have to tell you, it was nothing short of miraculous. For both of us. It’s nothing I will take credit for…ever. I am just the hollow bone and so grateful to be so.
And I was thinking…I want to do this more. To be in service lights me up. Makes me happy. Humbles me to tears. My art and photography are extensions of this healing gift for sure. But right now I guess I am just saying it because there is power and intention in sharing: I have a fire for empowering people in this way. Face to face…hands on…tapping into the universe and showing them how to awaken and heal. Passing on a spark. I’m just not sure how to start.
Dear universe, show me how to do more of this. I’m open and ready.”
