Cages

Photo taken by contributor Kyle Anderson, a man from Saskatchewan, Canada. Kyle is a 41-year-old health care professional who has battled depression and addiction for most of his life. He escapes by letting the camera become his mind’s eye, and hopes that each photo he takes allows others to see the world as he sees it, even for a split second.

About this photo: “This shot moves me. It speaks to the cages we feel that we are trapped in by our diagnosis. We see the world from a distance, at times out of focus… As unreal. All we have to do though is look at things from within us, as ourselves… The beauty of our world sparkles like a million gems.”

  2. Beautiful photo and beautiful thoughts. I can relate to both.

Diagnoses can be both limiting and liberating at the same time. On one end they give us a label, they put us in a box or cage; on the other, they might bring some relief and a sense of hope as they may also contain the key for us to get out of the cage.

For me as well, the key is to look at the gems,
at beauty, always there, inside and outside. Your photo also reminds me of a quote by R.W. Emerson: “when it’s dark enough you can see the stars.”

The stars are always there, at times behind the clouds, at time shining bright. But they are always there.

    Thank you for your work.
