Photo taken by contributor Lakesh, a 36-year-old woman currently serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Her first experience with depression came through a relationship. It was filled with ups and downs, and both pockets of joy and memorable disappointments. The relationship has since ended but that experience has changed her perspective of mental illness. She will forever be grateful for the lessons they taught each other.
About this photo: “I’ve lived abroad for nearly three years and have learned a new language, experimented with food, and connected with people whom I don’t imagine I would have met otherwise. And, with all the benefits of this experience, I still struggle with the idea of “home”. I don’t know what it is or how it will reflect on who I’ve become? This photo reminds of me of how often we pretend things at home are well but if you look closely there is darkness that lurks masked behind curtains that block out the sun. This image of home is the one that I’m most familiar with and yet I no longer desire it.”

What i love about this photo as that its significance slowly sneaks up on you as you sink deeper into the subtle nuances of it. “This photo reminds of me of how often we pretend things at home are well but if you look closely there is darkness that lurks masked behind curtains that block out the sun.
