Perspective

Photo taken by contributor Livonne, a 53-year-old woman from New South Wales in Australia who lives with PTSD, anxiety and depression. Following the death of her daughter on an access visit 20 years ago, Yvonne has struggled to come to terms with her grief, as well as sexual abuse as a child and a whole range of other issues. She is learning to live with PTSD and Complex Trauma Syndrome. Writing and photography are her passions, and she is currently putting the finishing touches on her first novel.

About this photo: “Before I started school, one of my favorite days was Thursday as that’s when I went shopping and got to spend some quality time with my Mum.  Every time we would drive past this scene, I wanted to swim out and touch the toy boats out on the water.  I couldn’t comprehend how they were actually normal sized boats but looked smaller because I was so far away from them. Perspective was something that always fascinated me.  I use this visualisation when dealing with problems that seem overwhelming.  I realise if I imagine them to be further away from me, they seem smaller.  It helps me to stop feeling so overwhelmed.  I took this photograph on one of my visits back to my old home town so I could relive the magic of those days spent with Mum as well as to remind myself to put everything into perspective.
