Please welcome first-time contributor Nicolart, a 23-year-old man from Bogotá, Columbia, who has been diagnosed with bipolar II. He is a suicide attempt survivor currently living with his parents and sister who are trying hard to understand his bipolar disorder. Right now he is in mixed state of depression and hypomania. Nicolart is a student of graphic design. He loves photography, especially digital photography inspired by surrealism. The photos he creates convey his emotional states.
About this photo: “Freedom is something I forget I have when I’m depressed. While birds can fly, I’m locked inside my mind. I wish I could have wings, like that black bird, and just hide from my illness, because I really hate being bipolar. It’s something I have to deal for the rest of my life.”

Awesome image. You’ve succeeded in conveying your emotions. It’s kind of poetic what you’ve displayed here and what it means to you. Your turning away from the bird speaks as if saying you don’t want to, or can’t look at the freedom.
I wish you well on your journey through this. Hopefully you find that strength inside you that is no doubt there to deal with your trying times.

I love how he depicted his feelings of being trapped by depression. I hope he can find a way to be happy more then sad.

As saddened as I am that you are burdened by such an affliction as yours, I am amazed at your ability to transcend it and create such an expressive work of art that is at one, technically excellent, and two, emotionally explosive. I hope your life situation improves, but I also hope that you never lose your vision, skill or drive.

This is such a real expression of what often time happens to one’s mind when battling with depression. Thank you for entering your photography, and touching upon your personal battle.

Hi Nicolart,
I am so glad you shared your powerful photo as well as your story with us! I, too, suffer from Bipolar II disorder, so I understand what you mean when you say that you are currently in a mixed state of depression & hypomania- I believe that I, too, am in such a state currently & have been for at least a few weeks- it’s a very difficult state of thought & feelings to be in & to try to deal with, much less try to explain to someone else who has not experienced it! I look forward to your sharing in the future & am sending positive vibrations your way in hopes that will help you! Please do the same for me if you can . . I hope that I can also post something here in the not too distant future . .
Sincerely,
Sam Spencer
