Photo taken by contributor Danielle in NJ who has suffered from anxiety and panic disorder for at least a dozen years, as well as periods of depression. It has affected her home life, work life, and personal life in many ways. She is trying to fight through it by working with doctors, using medication as needed, and immersing herself in her photography.
About this photo: “My mental health issues and body issues keep me from enjoying things that should be fun and easy, like the beach. So often I can see that there is beauty and fun to be had, but I feel so far away. I feel disengaged, self-conscious, and fearful. Photography is something that helps me to feel a bit more present and at ease. Hopefully with time, photography, and psychiatric help, I will be able to more fully engage and not feel trapped by my anxieties and insecurities.”

Omg, the picture is great but the story is disheartening. May good prevail!

Summer at the NJ beaches can be intimidating to anyone nervous around crowds. Personally I much prefer them in September or even in winter when the crowds leave but the beauty remains.

wonderful beach shot…and I relate to your depression and pain having regular bouts of it myself as well as BDD issues which at least for now seem to be doing better. Hang in there, have faith and keep taking photos!

This photo Is really fascinating – there’s so much tension between the mysterious, wavering blue of the sky and the happy beach scene below. You’ve captured something of what you talk about above. I hope you keep up with photography, and remember, when you can, that you are good enough as you are.
