Sinking Slowly

Photo taken by first-time contributor Thomas Slatin, a man in his thirties who is an adult survivor of childhood sexual abuse.  He was first diagnosed with major depressive disorder and PTSD at the age of 18.  On the advice of his fiancée, he picked up a camera and started taking pictures.  He has always been a talented and gifted writer, and has since dedicated his life to writing and photography as a means of documenting the human experience.  Thomas is currently fascinated with photographing abandonment, especially buildings.

About this photo: “This photograph represents abandonment.  As a child, I felt abandoned and was never believed when I reached out for help dealing with mental health issues or even the fact that I was being abused by people my parents trusted.  Taking pictures of abandoned places helps me capture the emotions of neglect and not being cared about.  There is just something beautiful in disarray, decay, and abandonment.
