Native Alaskan Culture

Photo taken by contributor Aaron Fiska 32-year-old Combat Infantryman from Anchorage, Alaska. He has been managing PTSD for 10 years using photography and cinematography. Getting out into the wilderness also helps him put life into perspective.

About this photo: “I attended an event not too long ago that had dancers from my Native Alaskan culture and from various American Indian cultures from across the nation. During this event, I was allowed to photograph the performances in such a manner that most other photographers weren’t. I previously posted a similar image on my own website, but I held this one back because it is my favorite of the lot. His intensity flows from his performance into this image. As a child, I was taught to dance and use our drums, but have forgotten how over time. I find myself trying to preserve traditions through photography and participating when I can.
