Safe Inside My Fortress

Photo taken by contributor autisticaplanet, a woman in her thirties who has Asperger’s Syndrome and accompanying anxiety related to social and sensory issues. She also has OCD. She writes a blog to pass along lifelong lessons to help those, adults in particular, dealing with Asperger’s. She hopes to help neurotypical people better understand the “complexities within the complexities” of autism spectrum disorders. She has had a passion for capturing images since childhood, when her father bought her a Kodak 110 on vacation. She’s been told that she sees and captures what others overlook or miss. Her work has been featured in the Daily Herald as well as the MAAP Newsletter, a publication for those with ASD and those who love them.

About this photo: This is a macro taken from a bouquet of Tulips on my kitchen table. The center represents to me the Holy Trinity. Shooting inside the flower conveyed the feelings of intimacy and protection I was looking for. The texture of the petals is soft & silky and the light play made this very simple photograph an enjoyable exercise during a difficult time in my life. I lost my mom to pulmonary fibrosis last month.

    1. Thank you very much! All I did was turn all the incandescent/fluorescent lights on and use the auto flash. I was just relaxing & playing around & I got blessed with the results.

    1. I appreciate your condolences. I lost my dad in 1994 & hope I have learned a few things since I was 14.75 years old. I am blessed to have had 2 wonderful parents/friends/role-models in my life. I think the best way we can honor those we love & have learned from is to keep on, building on their example.

  1. This is a very beautiful image. It conveys feeling in both emotion and touch, it makes me think of milk really, nourishing & those lotion/soap commercials where they appear to pour milk into the lotion/soap. This is indeed fragile & I like your description of it embodying the Holy Trinity.

My heart is with you over the loss of your mother. I’m glad you have creativity & photography to channel what you’re feeling. This image looks calming and peaceful. Thank you for sharing even through your pain. Thank you for being strong.

    1. What kind words..they do make a difference. You’re right, the creamy texture of the tulip does remind me of the Olay ads.

      1. Yes, the Olay ads, thank you I couldn’t remember which they were.

I hope you’re holding strong & look forward to witnessing what inspires you and keeps you sane! 😉 Writing & photography help me as well, I think so many of us can relate on this level.

        Take care!
