Photo taken by contributor Danielle, a woman who experiences severe depressive episodes. She loves photography, animals, and traveling when she is up to it.

About this photo: “I love giraffes. Their graceful form, their beautiful fur patterns, their knowing eyes. I was lucky enough recently to be eye to eye with one, and to feed lettuce to his long purple-y tongue. I was on a platform and he came right up to me. He looked at me as if he could see inside of me. I suddenly wanted to cry or give him a big hug. It was a beautiful moment, and a great reminder of how much I love traveling and experiencing new things and cultures. Depression keeps me from doing that much of the time. I can only hope my depression continues to get better, so I can travel and do more and more things outside of my comfort zone. It’s a beautiful world out there. I don’t want to keep missing out.”

  1. A truly beautiful post, not just the photography, but the heartfelt sentiment of the descriptive text too. I love giraffes too, for me it is their eyes that get my attention, not least because of the big eyelashes they have – always makes me smile. 🙂
I hope you continue to enjoy your photography and I hope your love of animals and taking their pictures helps you make a new path in life. 🙂

  2. I endure bi-polar and one of the best gifts I have ever given myself is travel. Many reasons for it but the really important one is that it helps me prove to myself over and over that I can do more than I fear I can’t. It isn’t always pretty and fun but, for me, it is important that I challenge my boundaries because I find them getting smaller and smaller if I don’t. I have seen the ships of the Serengeti float by, free and wild and have enjoyed the rush that it brings. I wish that for you.

  3. Giraffes are my favourite. They have been ever since I was a child. My therapist reckons this is something to do with wanting to rie above things, but I just think they’re beautiful, and I love their liquid, expressive eyes. Your photo was stunning. 🙂

  4. I really love this beautiful photograph as it reminds me of a trip I did to Kenya before I became very ill with bouts of clinical depression which robbed me of my ability to appreciate any of my senses. I have since travelled again and love photography as a creative outlet of my joys mainly. Thank You so much for rekindling that wonderful memory of being up close to the gentle giant….
