Unrestored Masterpiece; The Great Wall

Photo taken by contributor Thirdeyemom, who experienced severe postpartum depression after the birth of her first child. It was a terrifying, isolating experience for her, which included terrible insomnia and hallucinations. Thankfully with the help of doctors and family, one week after her son’s first birthday she was able to board a plane to South Africa, resuming her love of travel. Through traveling, writing, and photography she began to see the beauty of the world again.

About this photo: “I have always dreamed about someday seeing the Great Wall of China. In the fall of 2011, my dreams came true and my father and me spent a day exploring this amazing feat of engineering. There are many routes you can take along the Wall but for me there was only one way I wanted to go. The hard way. We chose the off the beaten path to the unrestored parts of the Wall at Jiankou. It was a rather challenging hike straight up but the rewards were worth it once we arrived on top of the Great Wall. There was hardly a soul there and the crumbling bricks of this masterpiece were breathtaking.”
