Who we are & why we are

Welcome to the gallery site of Broken Light Collective. We are artists of all levels and abilities who are affected by mental illness. We create and we share our work for the therapeutic benefits to us, as well as others who may be struggling and feeling scared and alone. Together we can move from disconnected to collective.

Photo taken by first-time contributor Heather Hamilton, a 25-year-old wife, friend, pet parent, daughter, granddaughter, vegetarian, survivor, bisexual, entrepreneur. She struggles with everyday choices, depression, and making the right decisions. One of the ways she gets release from the prison of her mind, is loving on her animals. She believes that they all feel what she feels, and know that by just being there, they help her.  She is in the process of a career change that has been incredibly stressful and emotionally taxing, but she is working towards doing something she loves. She is changing careers from programming to dog training.

About this photo: “This photograph is of Napoleon, my senior boy who is taking the journey of entrepreneurship with me. He came to us at 6 years old, with a fair amount of obedience training. As my life went on with him, I realized I was not in my career of choice. I wasn’t following my passion. I love dogs, and especially training them. As the last 2 years have come and gone, Napoelon and I have trained on leash work, boundary training, respect, obedience, and trick work. I learn through books, other’s experiences, seminars, and other training facilities. I practice everything I learn on Napoleon. He is grateful, because it’s fun, and I’m grateful because I can see what works and what doesn’t. He has been there for me more than any person I know. More than my mom, my husband, my friends. He is there to rest his head on me when I am empty. He fills my heart, at least a little bit. If I didn’t have him… I don’t know where I would be. He has truly saved me.

*A special thank you from Broken Light on this “Love Your Pet Day” to all of the furry friends who have been there for us through difficult times. Also, thanks to everyone who has helped us pass 2,000 follows in our first year. Keep photographing, keep submitting, and keep sharing the ‘Light!’

We humans can learn much from animals. Especially dogs. Unconditional love. You are blessed to have him in your life. It’s a wonderful, life changing journey for the two of you. Best of luck.

Every word in this post is so true! I was going through a hard time (depression) until I decided to adopt my cat (6 months then) , it’s been 2 months since she is with me and I love her more than anything. She will always be my first child. I love how animals are happy with little things. They are lovely. I just regret people taking advantage of them. I want to help end animal cruelty because in all honesty, they probably deserve to live in this planet more than we do. They are amazing. Your boy is really cute.

Thank you so much! 🙂 This is one of my favorite pictures of him, just being completely there for me. This picture shows everything you need to know about him. I was sad when I took this picture, and now – even now, this picture always cheers me up.

You can help the fight against animal cruelty by speaking up, signing petitions, become veggie, volunteer at rescues (not shelters though), and speaking up about making sure people spay/neuter their animals. Another big one for me is teaching families how to teach their children to behave around animals. They won’t know unless someone shows them!
