Photo taken by contributor Tiger Lillies, a woman in her forties from Ontario who suffers from deep depression, psychosis, and agoraphobia, possibly bipolar disorder, all while raising her two young grandchildren, four and six years old. Thankfully she has a supportive partner Rick who helps make daily life with children possible. Her grandchildren, as well as her recent love of photography, have become her saviours and kept her from succumbing to the negative temptations that regularly haunt her. She has tried to commit suicide several times in the past, but thankfully is still with us. Her hopes are to get past her illness, as well as glaucoma, and become a professional photographer.
About this photo: “This photo was taken at a nearby farm. It has emotional meaning to me. With having all these illnesses, life is not always black and white. There are a whole lot of grays, and one day they pop out and hit you like a 2×4. Today was a very bad day. I had reached the lowest I had been in a very long time. Waking up at 2:00 am and began crying then and didn’t stop until half an hour ago. It’s now 10:20pm. The horses, black and white are beautiful majestic creatures. It’s the grays around them that aren’t so pretty. Just like my life. I have two beautiful babies, a very caring giving man, yet the grays pop up and try to spoil all the beauty. Just like they did today.”

Hello, Tiger Lillies! Great photo. And, yes indeed, photography is a great outlet. If you’ll permit, I’d like to share something I’ve learned while shooting some black & white as well as color shots – sometimes gray skies can make for a great photograph – in this case, they let the bright, clean, crisp, white snow come down!
