Photo taken in Massachusetts by a woman with Major Depressive Disorder. She also has agoraphobic tendencies, but is determined to get out more in 2013.

About this photo: “This photograph was taken several years ago in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. I was there for a winter wedding. It was beautiful, but my favorite part was bundling up and walking on the beach. I find there to be a sadness but beauty about being on a beach when it is cold and empty. It feels much more at home to me than being on a warm beach with everyone running around in bathing suits, frolicking with kites and sandcastles.

I don’t like to make resolutions, but I do have some goals. One goal is to get out more this year, so I don’t miss out on beautiful experiences like this one. Whether that means simply taking more walks around my neighborhood and in the nearby nature reservation, or visiting a friend in Paris, I must get out. My depression has left me stuck in my house for too long. I don’t want to miss out on the beauty that is out there – and perhaps I’ll even have some fun and make a sandcastle or two along the way.”

  1. What a fantastic website and way of supporting each other through difficult times. My brother suffers from schizophrenia and I wish he had an interest in photography so he had a way to express himself and find a collective of such supportive friends.

  2. Walking in your neighbourhood is an excellent idea. I try to do it every day and when I don’t I feel like I’ve missed out on an important part of my day. Not only is it good for you mentally but also physically. Beautiful picture. Reminds me of the beach at my cottage where I am most at peace.
