Photo taken by Thirdeyemom, who experienced severe postpartum depression after the birth of her first child. It was a terrifying, isolating experience for her, which included terrible insomnia and hallucinations. Thankfully with the help of doctors and family, one week after her son’s first birthday she was able to board a plane to South Africa, resuming her love of travel. Through traveling, writing, and photography she began to see the beauty of the world again.
About this photo: “This photo was taken in November 2001 after my three day hike along the Inca Trail to the hidden city of Machu Picchu. It was my first trek and it was special as I took it with my father. When we arrived early in the morning and saw the sun rising over the ancient ruins, it was truly breathtaking and I couldn’t stop marveling at the splendor of man’s magical creation. The trip was also significant because it occurred shortly after September 11th and was my first time boarding an international flight after that horrific day. I was petrified but once I landed safe and sound, I realized that anything was possible if you try.”
