Ominous Clouds

Photo taken by Hines, a 35-year-old woman from St. Louis who was diagnosed with depression and anxiety when she was 14-years-old.

About this photo: I took this photograph somewhere off of Interstate 270 in Illinois. It was shortly after I bought the camera I use now and I was driving home and I loved the way the clouds looked… just threatening to storm. I cropped a lot of the original photo out and narrowed it down to what I considered a more interesting composition.  It wasn’t until recently that I decided to use this photo to practice a technique I admire from another fellow blogger, Leanne Cole. I have yet to know exactly how she does what she does to add such drama and interest to her photos, but the end result really appeals to me, so I just decided to take what I already know about Gimp and try to accomplish the effect on my own.  This was just my first attempt, but I am confident that with continued practice I can become the accomplished photographer I aspire to be. As far as how the final photo got it’s look, it was layering and applying different modes to each layer with different opacities, a layer mask and a paintbrush. As for invocation of mood… although it looks dark, the brightness inside is hopeful.
